The Progressives Governors Forum (PGF) has rejected any political alliance capable of undermining the All Progressives Congress (APC) and its candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The position is seen as a direct setback to the political arrangement being promoted by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike in Rivers State, where he has advocated a “Rainbow Coalition” involving members of both the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Wike, a PDP member with close political ties to the APC, has been promoting the coalition as a platform through which members of both parties could work together ahead of the 2027 elections.

However, following a closed-door meeting in Abuja on Monday, September 14, the APC governors declared that they would not support any arrangement that could weaken the party or its candidates.

The Chairman of the PGF and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, disclosed the position while reading the communique issued after the meeting.

Uzodinma said the forum unanimously resolved that its members would not participate in, support or endorse any political alliance capable of undermining President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid, weakening the APC or adversely affecting any of its candidates.

The governors maintained that their political commitment remained exclusively with candidates sponsored by the APC.

“In other words, the forum has no intention to support any candidate at any level that is not an APC candidate, because our candidates are being sponsored by our party,” Uzodinma said.

He added that the governors’ campaign commitment was exclusively to all APC candidates, warning that any arrangement capable of creating confusion, divided loyalty or conflicting interests within the party would not be entertained.

The development could further deepen political differences between Wike and sections of the APC ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly in Rivers State where competing political interests are already taking shape.
