Arise News anchor, Rufai Oseni, has questioned the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) over its handling of opposition figures, accusing the party of failing to tolerate dissenting voices in the country.

Oseni raised the concerns on Wednesday during Arise Television’s Morning Show, where he criticised what he described as persistent attacks and harassment directed at members of opposition parties.

Drawing a comparison with the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan, the broadcaster asked whether the APC would have gained power if Jonathan had treated the opposition with similar hostility when the party was struggling to unseat the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

He recalled that APC leaders openly criticised Jonathan, organised protests, demanded his resignation and even called for a parallel government during his administration without being arrested or prevented from expressing their views.

"If Jonathan had treated the opposition badly, would they be in power today? Would APC be in power? Jonathan allowed them to talk, he allowed them to protest, he allowed them to even abuse him. That is democracy," Oseni said.

The journalist argued that political parties should uphold the democratic freedoms they enjoyed while in opposition, rather than restrict those same freedoms after assuming power.

He further cautioned that continued attacks on opposition members could undermine Nigeria's multiparty democracy and create room for a one-party political system.

Oseni therefore urged the APC to embrace constructive criticism, respect opposing political views and prioritise governance instead of engaging in confrontations with those who challenge its administration.
