The Federal Government has initiated the moves to develop a National Policy on Prosecution, expected to ensure efficient trial of criminal cases in the country.
CEOAFRICA news desk gathered that a stakeholders’ consultative meeting on the proposed policy was held on Wednesday in Abuja with the top officials in the justice sector in the states and the Federal Ministry of Justice.
The policy was said to have been proposed by the Federal Justice Sector Reform Coordinating Committee, which was established in 2008 to serve as a forum for developing, managing and coordinating the development and implementation of policies and reforms aimed at improving justice delivery in the country.
The proposed policy however is expected to provide a guideline to which all prosecutors and prosecuting agencies will be subjected.
The Solicitor-General of the Federation and Chairman of the FJSRCC, Abdullahi Yola, explained at the meeting that the committee proposed the policy following the discovery that the absence of necessary policies and legislations was among the major challenges in the administration of criminal justice in the country.
“The National Policy on Prosecutions will target all officials and agencies involved in prosecuting offences and advising on crime management, evidence gathering and investigations,” he noted.
He further highlights that policy is expected to identify and articulate good practices that are capable of improving capacity, create incentives and enhance the productivity of prosecutors.
