Be Prudent With Public Funds, Ex-Financial Expert Tells Politicians

Nigeria’s political office holders have been urged to be more prudent in the application of public funds in order to reduce poverty in the country.

Former President and Chairman of Council, Chartered Institute of Bankers in Nigeria, Dr. Segun  Aina has asked while speaking with newsmen in Ibadan on Thursday at a 2-day workshop, stressed the need for politicians to be prudent in financial management.

At the workshop organised by the Segun Aina Foundation (SAF) for the members of its Board of Trustees Advisory Council and selected beneficiaries of the foundation, the banking expert noted that one of the cogent roles of government was the institution of social justice for all.

He explained that it was desirable for government at all levels to spend public money in the interest of the growth and development of the society and the common people.

"Political office holders should do fewer things that would waste the resources of Nigeria because this money belongs to all of us," he said.

He appealed to the federal, states, local governments, corporate bodies and even individuals to try and see how they could improve the society and make Nigeria better.

He opined that if those in political offices use the state resources to develop the people and infrastructure "Government will spend less on security as the ranks of unemployed youths, hooligans, armed robbers, and others who engaged in anti-social activities will deplete.

Speaking on the activities of the Segun Aina Foundation, the founder expressed happiness that many youths who had been privileged to benefit from the organisation's project successful and are contributing to the development of the society.

The Segun Aina Foundation Strategic Planning Workshop was held every five years to chart a way forward and enhance the plans by the organisation to expedite philanthropic activities.

In its 21 years of existence, it had made its impact felt in the area of scholarship awards, empowerment of the Nigerian youths , mentoring and enlightenment of the people against pessimism, complacency and vissionlessness.
