A Namibian delegation headed by Zambezi Regional Governor Lawrence Sampofu, on Tuesday toured Zamseed, the oldest and largest government owned seed company in Zambia.

Founded in 1974, Zamseed processes a diversified portfolio of seeds ranging from maize and soya beans to sorghum, rice, groundnuts and many others.

It processes up to 5 000 tons of seeds annually, mainly for export.

It has expanded its market by establishing shops in DRC, Tanzania, Namibia and Botswana.

According to its MD Ben Zulu it plans on becoming a regional player in the seed business.

It sources its seeds from both commercial and small-scale farmers. The seeds go through a rigorous testing process before they are certified as fit for use.

The company has a farm measuring over 1 200 hectares where seeds are produced and research is done.

It became evident during the meeting that plans are also underway to start producing millet seeds for markets both in Namibia and Botswana.
