The Melcom Group of Companies has denied reports that cracks had developed on the concrete pillars on certain floor of its Melcom Plus shop in Accra that created panic among customers.
Addressing a news conference in Accra on Tuesday, Mr Godwin Avenorgbo, Director of Communications, Melcom Group, described a Mid-Day News Report carried on Joy FM, a private Radio station in Accra on September 18, 2015 on the alleged cracks and the resultant panic as false and calculated to damage the hard-won image of the Melcom brand.
According to Mr Avenorgbo, he had led a team of structural and maintenance experts to the Melcom Plus Facility to inspect the alleged crack and that their report indicated that what was reported to be cracks were what structural engineers defined as "Expansion Joints" or "Movement Joints".
He said a Certificate of Completion for Habitation issued by the Accra Metropolitan Authority (AMA)as well as an Engineers Structural Integrity Certification issued by Ing. E.A. Mensah Sanjok on the building, copies of which were made available to the media, indicated that the shop met the required construction standards that made it structurally safe and sound.
He, therefore, urged the public to disregard the news report and to continue to patronise the shop.
Present at the meeting with the media were Mr Kenneth Ampofo, sub-Metro Co-ordinator and other officials of the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), Ing. E.A. Mensah Sanjok and an official of AMA to reassure the general public through the media that the premises of the Melcom Plus shop was safe for business.
Meanwhile, the Melcom Group has urged Joy FM to retract the report and apologise to the Group within two days, failing which the Melcom Group would seek legal intervention.
The Group has also hinted of reporting the conduct of the Radio station to the National Media Commission and the Ghana Journalists Association, among other stakeholders.
