Commandant Yusuff Kolawole Salami, Oyo State Federal Road Safety Commission, has called on all road users to avoid over speeding and use of phones while driving to avoid preventable road accidents.
Salami made this statement during the "Community Today" programme of CEOAfrica. He stated that excessive speeding has caused high level of death in the country.
The Commandant stressed three factors that cause road traffic crises: human factor; mechanical factor and environmental factor.
"The human factor plays a dominant role. It ranges from over speeding, dangerous driving, fatigue, usage of alcohol/drug, overloading, overtaking and so on," he said.
He added that "there is a key relationship with all the transport unions all over the country. The command is using the relationship to get across to the transport unions, to educate their people to point out areas where the corps observe problem and work together to ensure that common goal of reducing the road traffic crisis on our roads to the lowest minimum is achieved."
He emphasised the enforcement of the use of safety helmet by motor cyclists and encouraging the passengers to use it.
The Commandant said "the corps rose up to occasion by looking for ways to ameliorate the incidences and the consequences of the occurrence of road crises that are happening among the Okada riders. The part of the solution the corps put forward was the compulsory usage of safety helmet."
Commandant Salami advised all road users to obey traffic rules and regulations and always be patient.
