Following allegation that some of the Kenyan Soldiers were involved in looting the Westgate Mall during the last month’s siege, the Kenyan army has denied the allegation.
CEOAFRICA.com gathered that the spokesperson of the Kenyan Army, Gen Julius Karangi, told a parliamentary committee that they only took water from a store in the mall in quenching their thirst.
According to sources, CCTV footage which was taken inside the entrance to the Westgate mall’s Nakumatt supermarket, and released after the incident showed some of the troops carrying shopping bags out of the mall.
It was further disclosed that one of the footage showed several soldiers walking out of the supermarket, past a blood-spattered floor, carrying plastic carrier bags, while another clip displayed some of them next to a mobile phone outlet.
While appearing before the joint committee on National Security and Defence, Gen. Karangi said the soldiers were duly permitted by their commanders before taken the waters to quench their thirst.
The Kenyan military says it has launched an investigation into the looting allegations, which correspondents say will have angered many Kenyans.
The Westgate attack sparked a four-day siege in which large parts of the shopping centre were destroyed.
