Dwellers in Enugu state, Nigeria have called on the National Film Censorship Board to put right mercenaries in place so as to curb the rate of pornographic films in the state.
They urged the South-East Governance Network, civil society groups and faith-based organisations to fight the menace.
While expressing their opinion, some of the residents said it is important to clamp down on pornographic films which have filled every part of the state as a way of reducing criminal activities like prostitution, street begging etc.
According to Mr. Bismac Oji, a member of SEGON, the group had received several complaints from many Enugu residents on display of pornographic pictures in the state.
Mr. Bismac said, “The residents who complained to us did so because we had in the past quelled activities and acts capable of infringing on the moral lives of Nigerians, especially among adolescents and youths.” He also attributed the increasing cases of rape and other violent crimes to the influence of these films on teenagers.
Furthermore, Oji said the organisation is working with police and other security agencies to beef up security in some areas within the state to curb activities of pickpockets and roadside gambling in the state. He then urged the state House of Assembly to enact a legislation that would ban street begging in the state.
