RWANDA- The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has signed a $28 million financial agreement with the Rwandan government to support six programs in the economic development poverty strategy (EDPRS2) implementation period.

The six programs that will benefit from the fund include institutional capacity building for both  the ministry of natural resources program and the national environment climate fund (Fonerwa), supporting ecosystem rehabilitation and protection for the pro-poor green growth program and support for development cooperation for results program.

The poverty and environment initiative, development cooperation for results and the transformational capacity development for the implementation and coordination of policies are the other programs covered by the funds.

Rwanda is one of four countries worldwide (together with Korea, Denmark and China) in seeing it as a competitive advantage to grasp low-carbon development opportunities and transform the way their economies operate.

The strategy outlines how adaptation and mitigation actions can be integrated across all sectors of the economy, and puts Rwanda in a stronger position not only to face the twin challenges of climate change and poverty, but to take advantage of the opportunities presented by a low-carbon growth path in a greener global economy. It aims to ensure the future prosperity of every Rwandan citizen.

The grant is part of the US$ 400 million aligned to EDPRS2 by the United Nations development assistance plan (UNDAP) for Rwanda for the next five years. UNDAP is aimed at supporting three major pillars of the EDPRS2 notably economic development, accountable democratic governance and human development issues.

"The UNDAP reflects our strong commitment to more results orientation and increased transparency and accountability," said Lamin Momodou Manneh, the One UN Resident coordinator.
