NIGERIA (Abuja) – Nigerians has been advised to always be positive and proud of their country’s achievements, rather than scaring people with inflammatory statements that the country will collapse in 2015.

This was disclosed by the Honourable Minister of Information, Labaran Maku, on Tuesday, during the World Press Conference held at the International Conference Centre, Abuja.

In his address, Labaran Maku said even the Europeans acknowledged the importance of Africa in the civilization of the world, considering their historical compilations by their philosophers, and it is not in their capacity to predict Nigeria’s breakage by 2015.

The minister recounted so many achievements of the country as the centenary celebration gets closer, adding that it was the country that helped Zimbabwe, Angola, and Mozambique to gain their independence, while playing greater role in ending apartheid in South Africa.

“Nigerians should say no to people saying the country would break if they do not gain power in 2015. We should chastise them and reject their tactics.

“This country will remain one, and indivisible even in 2,000 years to come.” Maku said.

He frowned at the way newspapers operates in the country nowadays, saying it is time for journalists to stop being partisan in their report.

“Nowadays, when you see some newspapers, they are not different from political banners and handbills. The situation is even precarious to the point that some newspapers are already ascribed to certain political parties and they won’t report situations the way they are, rather, they will say it from the opposition angle.

“That will not enable our people to see the goodness in the current administration.

Mr. Maku said the current Jonathan-led administration has helped to manage economy in spite of the global economic meltdown experienced by developed nations.

“All the saying that the economy is bad is mere political propaganda. Nigerian economy has not been better than this in the past.” He said.

On power, Labaran Maku said no administration has done so much in the area compared to what Jonathan administration is doing.

He said: “We already have ten power generating plants for commissioning. No administration has achieved this milestone in recent time. I assure every Nigerian that by next year, when the whole power plants will start working, there will be constant electricity supply.”

Furthermore, Labaran Maku acknowledged the effort of the current administration in the area of transportation, especially the resuscitation of the rail transportation across the country, stressing that the system is safe, economical and effective.

He also said work has started on major roads like Lagos-Ibadan, Bida- Mokwa, Ilorin-Kabba, Enugu-Port Harcourt, Akure-Ilesha and many more, while about 32 road rojects has been completed across the nation in the last three years.

Mr. Maku added that other areas like agriculture, job creation, infrastructure, security etc has felt the wind of Goodluck Jonathan's transformation agenda, adding that more of these improvements shall come in 2014.
