The Honourable representing Akinyele 2 constituency in the Oyo State House of Assembly, Hon Bolaji Badmos has said that state legislatures should be financially autonomous in order to be able to discharge their constitutional responsibilities effectively.

Expressing his views on Thursday, 2017 during an exclusive interview with CEOAfrica on its online television programme ‘Community Today’, Hon. Badmos stated that legislature’s dependence on the executive financially maybe a form of subjection to the decision of the executive.

He gave kudos to the Oyo State 8th Assembly, noting that aside Lagos State Assembly which has passed the bill on Financial Autonomy, Oyo State is the second state which has passed same bill which gives the legislatures a level playing ground to discharge their constitutional duties without interference.

ACHIEVEMENTS AS AN HONOURABLE

Hon.Badmos while reeling out his achievement as an Honourable representing Akinyele 2 Constituency said ‘’ the best way to judge or assess a lawmaker is the number of bills and motions he or she sponsored.

“Constitutional requirement of a lawmaker is to represent your constituency by sponsoring bills/motions that is beneficial to your constituency.”

Hon. Badmos, said “the Community service law which was enacted by the House to punish minor offenders who are kept in the same prison cells as hardened criminals, was co-sponsored by the Speaker and I.

“Another bill is for the Establishment of the Resident Registration Agency in Oyo State which has passed the second reading, the essence of this bill is to have all residents registered in order to take care of the infrastructural development of the state.

“The bill on the need for corporate organisations to leave up to their corporate responsibility in the area of employment and the motion on the Abatakan dilapidated bridge which has been fixed by FEMA, these are bills that mine and other constituencies have benefited from.”

UNIQUENESS OF THE 8TH ASSEMBLY

Composition of intellectually capable members who do not believe in violence has made the Oyo state Assembly unique Hon. Badmos said.

‘’That we enjoy peaceful co- existence with the executive does not mean we are pocketed. Over 40 bills have been passed by this 8th assembly and the beautiful thing about the bills is that they are quality bills that have positive impacts on the citizens of Oyo State. We don’t just pass bills; the bills are scrutinised before they are passed’’.

CHEIFTAINCY REVIEW BY THE GOVERNOR OF OYO STATE

Expressing his opinion on the call for the chieftaincy review by Gov. Ajimobi , Hon. Badmos said he is in full support.

‘’The purpose of every responsible government is to make sure obsolete laws are reviewed to be in accordance with the present situation.

“Whatever the executive has done must pass through the state assembly for amendment to suit the decision of the Oyo people,’’ he said.

LGA FINANCIAL AUTONOMY AND ELECTION IN OYO STATE

Local government financial autonomy is a good idea, but on the grounds that each LGA will be able to take care of the finances, he said.

Speaking on the issue of the Local Government Election in Oyo state, he appealed to the people who are in court with the state govt. to resolve the matter amicably so that election will be held, stating that the essence of the creation of the LCDA is to bring development to the grass root.
