NIGERIA (Bayelsa)- Following the alleged non-implementation of an existing agreement by Shell, hundreds of women in Peremabiri community, Bayelsa State, went half-nude to show their grievances.

It was gathered that the protesters tied red cloth to barricade the entrance of the oil platform located in the community, while some of them carried placards with different inscriptions like “Shell: Give us Light”, “Implement MoU or go”, “We need water, Light, School for our children” among others.

The protesters claimed that Shell adopted delay tactics to avoid providing the amenities which, according to them, were time-bound.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson of Shell Petroleum Development Community (SPDC), Precious Okolobo has appealed to the aggrieved women to adopt dialogue rather than protest.

“The SPDC has continued to work with the Peremabiri community on the implementation of the MoU in their area. The MoU model has provision for addressing grievances.”

Okolobo said SPDC has procured a new set of generator that is being transported to the area for installation and commissioning.
He said the set was twice the capacity of the bad one which broke down few months ago, and would be commissioned as soon as possible.

“The Bayelsa State Government and MoU Cluster Development Board are aware of the situation and are engaging the Community Development Committee,” Okolobo said.
