Nyamasheke Rice Farmers has expressed over lack of markets for their yields as they appeal to the Rwanda Government to help them with reliable and accessible markets in their district for their produce. According to the report, the market hazard has been one among the key challenges which have been affecting the Coproda and Irebero growing rice in Mugonero maeshland, as well AIS-Kibati, Dukore, Urakoga, Cokirima, Compaseka and Coremakanya. CEOAFRICA gathered that these challenges which started last year when government introduces the new system of standardizing agricultural products processing contribute to situations whereby they still have tones of unsold produce in their stores. The president of Irebero cooperative, Laurent Ndahimana, confirmed that he farmers have been suffering since the new system came into effect because of the distance they have to cover before getting to the nearest factories. Ndahimana in his words, admitted that transport has been a problem in that it takes more than six hours to get to burgarama factory, which is the nearest client, adding that it is a situation which discourages buyers. The vice president of Coproda, Joseph Ntakiyimana in his statement, revealed that buyers have not been patronizing since the past farming season because of the high transport costs, adding that there are still four tones of rice in their stores yet the harvest period is approaching.
