The Nigeria Police Force has announced that the nationwide protests by the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) on Sunday will be a peaceful one as they are prepared to maintain law and order.
The Oyo State Police Command said its men were prepared to ensure that the Sunday protests were not hijacked by hoodlums. The command’s Public Relations Officer, Adekunle Ajisebutu, said that churches and other places of worship would be given security attention.
The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, said the state police command was always on routine patrol every day and that Sunday would not be an exception.
The Kwara State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Ajayi Okasanmi, also said the command would ensure that the protest was orderly and safe, while the Edo State Police Command said that though it had not been officially informed about the planned protest, it did not expect any breakdown of law and order.
Osun State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Femi Joseph, said the command had not been informed about the protest, that “everybody has the right to organise a peaceful protest but there is a need for the police to be aware for the necessary action so that miscreants would not take over the protest.”
Cross River State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Hafiz Inuwa, said he had yet to be briefed on the planned protests.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Bauchi State Police Command, DSP Kamal Abubakar, said the command had not got any official notice from CAN. Also, Taraba and Rivers state police commands said they were not aware of the planned protest but promised to do the needful should CAN officially contact them about the planned protests.
