The Oyo State Commissioner of Police, CP Shina Olukolu had on Monday paraded suspected hoodlums of NURTW members together with other culprits with heinous crimes such as banditry, abduction, impersonation, goods diversion and public disturbance as a whole.
This parade summed up the outstanding number of achievements of the CP since January till date.
CP Olukolu asserted this at the press briefing held at Oyo State Police Command Headquarters, Eleyele, Ibadan, on 3rd of June, 2019.
Olukolu, while parading the 25 gunmen, involving robbers, criminal receivers, abductors and goods diversion bandits, 15 hoodlums alleged for disturbing public peace, 14 hoodlums of NURTW members, and one fake customs officer, stated that exhibits such as arm and ammunition, vehicle and motorcycles, fake badge and Identity Cards, cartons of Nittol Tablet Soaps, laptops, different cell phones, branded T-Shirts, brand new electronic appliances, Emulsion paints, pieces of Sangols and Cathelo, together with medical equipment were recovered from these suspected culprits across different part of the state.
The CP attested that, “upon interrogation, suspects had made confessional statements to the crime”, and “investigation is now in progress to arrest other fleeing members of the notorious criminal syndicate and recover their firearms”.
Olukolu acknowledged the joint effort of the government, officers and the populace which aided these achievements since his inception as the new CP.
He said “...the command has rejigged our security architecture through community and intelligence led policing, revamped vehicular patrol, launch of “Operation Puff Adder”, and public partnership to rid the state of kidnapping, Armed robbery and other heinous crimes; coupled with the donation of vehicles and equipments by the Oyo State government to fight crime and criminality.
“These strategies have greatly paid off through series of arrests of criminal elements and recovery loots by officers and men of the command.”
The CP further assured people of security before, during and after the festive period, knowing that the season is associated with high rate of crimes.
“We are also conscious of increase in crime rate often associated with festive period.
“The Oyo State command as parts of its proactive measure to allay the fear of the citizens of the state is working assiduously round the clock to put up a robust plan that would guarantee security of life and property before, during and after the forth-coming Eid-el-fitr celebration in the state,” he said.
CP Olukolu thereby reiterated the cognitive achievements of the police command since his inception as the Oyo State CP till date having been attached in annexure I, II and III.
“It is thoughtful of us to keep the good and peace loving people of Oyo State abreast of our achievements from January, 2019 up till date.
“These have been highlighted in the statistics as attached in annexure I, II and III”
Following the statistics in annexure I, the command had total number of 3720 cases of general crimes reported, 5341 (m) and 131 (f) suspects arrested, 3052 cases charged to court, 3429 (m) and 65 (f) suspects charged, while 2692 cases involving 2465 (m) and 27 (f) suspects are awaiting trial.
The annexure II statistics recorded 180 cases of armed robbery, with 37 weapons, 3585 live cartridges, 16 vehicles and 65 motorcycles recovered from the 277 suspects arrested, as 170 cases were charged to court, and convictions remain pending in court, of which there is no case discharged.
The crime statistic returns of Anti-Kidnapping squad in annexure III stated 9 names of complainants with dates been reported, 15 victims (11 males, 4 females), 10 suspects, 12 victims been rescued, 3 casualties and remarks from court, while some are under investigation.
