A youth association, Peoples Democratic Party Young Democrats, has urged President Goodluck Jonathan to, without further delay, declare his intention to seek re-election in 2015.

The group’s South East Zonal Coordinator, Mr. Obi Mbadiwe, who addressed journalists in Enugu on Tuesday, said the call on Jonathan to seek re-election was based on his performance in office.

He said, “Look at the various achievements of President Goodluck Jonathan in such areas as the economy, which is the number one in Africa today in terms of GDP (Gross Domestic Product), the massive infrastructural development in the six geo-political zones of the country; the effort to reposition the electricity authority by involving the private sector to drive the effort and ensure adequate and improved efficiency; and the introduction of compulsory education for the Almajiris that has given a new face to poverty reduction in the northern part of the country.

“Looking at these giant strides of the President, we, the PDP Young Democrats, are calling on the President to present himself for re-election come 2015 to continue with the transformation agenda, which has affected all the nooks and crannies of this great country.”

The group promised that it would mobilise youths in the country to support and eventually vote for Jonathan during the presidential election.

It called on all the youth in the South East to turn out on August 7, when the association will be inaugurated in Enugu, to demonstrate their support for Jonathan.

The group further explained that it decided to persuade Jonathan to run in 2015 because he had the ability to take the country to a new height in spite of the distractions facing his government.

The group, which describes itself as an NGO within the PDP, said it was interested in deepening democratic norms in the country.
