A four-room apartment was on Tuesday razed by fire in Umuokpu, Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State.

Three children said to be sleeping in the apartment narrowly escaped death as they were reportedly rescued by their cousin, a 17-year old girl, Chinenye Igwedimma,

The building located at No. 1 Ezingwu Street, which belonged to the family of a staff member of the Anambra Broadcasting Service, Awka, Blessing Uchendu, reportedly went up in flames.

It was learnt that property worth millions of Naira, including academic certificates, were razed by the inferno.

Residents and sympathizers said the fire was caused by electrical malfunction as it started shortly after electricity was restored.

Narrating her ordeal, the rescuer said she had returned to the house to perform some chores when she met the roof of the building in flames.

She said, “My first action was to pull out three the kids who were sleeping in the burning apartment.

“I quickly raised alarm for help as I was overwhelmed by the inferno while trying to salvage a few other items.”

On her part, Blessing Uchendu said she was at the ABS Corporate Headquarters when she got a call that the house was in flames.

She added, “I quickly rushed home only to find out that everything including my academic certificates from primary school to university had been destroyed in the inferno,”.
