FOR his strides in the development of sports in Abia State, journalists in the South East zone have named Governor Theodore Ahamefula Orji as the Best Sports Governor in the zone.

Announcing the decision to accord the honour to the governor, the journalists in a release signed by Clement Nnachi on Monday said they unanimously chose Orji when they met in Enugu State to deliberate on the fate of sports in the zone.

Orji’s choice, he said, was made possible not only by the financial support and commitment the governor gave to the four state sponsored teams, Enyimba FC of Aba,  Abia Warriors FC of Umuahia, Abia Comets  and Enyimba Feeders, but also for doing same for some other sports including handball, hockey  and athletics, among others, within the period under review.

Nnachi, the Nigeria Tribune correspondent in Abakiliki, said the award would be presented to the governor in a colourful ceremony on a date to be announced soon.

Also speaking on the award, Heartland of Owerri Media Officer, Cajetan Nkwopara, said the journalists introduced the best sports governor award this year in order to encourage leaders of the zone to pay greater attention to the declining state of sports and sports infrastructure.
