The Bishops of Ibadan Ecclesiastical Province, comprising Ibadan Archdiocese, Ondo, Ekiti, Ilorin, Oyo and Osogbo Dioceses met at the Pope John Paul II Pastoral Center at Ado Ekiti from 11th till 12th August 2014.

The Bishops at the meeting agreed that the church will collaborate with Doctors and other medical personnel to sensitize and educate members of the church on the dangers, symptoms and management of the Ebola disease as well as putting in some measures that will help curtail the spread of the disease.

In a communiqué signed by the President, Most Rev. Gabriel Leke Abegunrin and the Secretary, Rev Felix Ajakaye, the Bishops expressed concern about the spread of the Ebola Virus Disease; commending government for its effort to curtail the spread of the disease and calling everyone to take caution.

“That the common self-signing with water at the entrance of the Church and other
occasions be suspended. This does not preclude the use of Holy Water for other
purposes. Shaking of hands for the Sign of Peace at Mass be suspended, given the risk
such contact entails at public celebrations’’

Priests were also cautioned on touching of the sick during hospital visitation.

The Bishops commended individual and corporate organizations that put in necessary measures in place to ensure peace in the election which took place in Ekiti and Osun state.

“We are particularly grateful that the elections were devoid of rampant bloodshed and criminality for which such an exercise had been notorious in the past. We highly commend
those who made personal and corporate commitment and sacrifice to secure peace”

The bishops pleaded with the losers and winners in the election to work together for the good of the land.

The bishops also acknowledged the problem of insecurity facing the country; they called on all those who can help solve the problem to rise up to the challenge. They concluded by offering prayer for the country.
