The Vice-Chancellor, University of Ibadan, Professor Isaac Adewole, on Thursday disclosed that the institution will continue to partner the police strategically in order to boost peace and security in the country.
Adewole, who spoke when he received the state Commissioner of Police Muhammed Indabawa in his office, also pledged intellectual support to the Nigerian Police, saying this was necessary to equip them for better services.
"I want to assure you that University of Ibadan will support the Nigerian
Police intellectually and in other areas as may be necessary. We have enjoyed
tremendous and fascinating relationship with officers and men of the police.
Gone are the days when you have policemen who are not well read. The Nigerian
Police of today are different. We have people who are cautious and well
informed. "Any of your staff who wants to run a degree programme let us know. As long as they have a good school certificate we would handle the rest. But UI would not take anybody who does not have five credits.
"It is our delight that you are here officially. Some of the terrible
stories we were experiencing have disappeared. The response we get on policing is wonderful and we are happy. Truly you are our friends just like we are your friends,” he said.
According to him, the institution’s relationship with the police would
continue. Without peace and security there can be no development, so we need to work with you. We must work for an efficient police.
"The Command assisted us by training virtually every member of our
security outfit. When we had tough moments the police were there for us. The
Nigerian Police have fantastic reputation outside Nigeria. Anywhere they serve they are the best. If they have challenges at home it is a Nigerian thing," Adewole said.
Earlier, Indabawa, said, "Our visit is not just a child's play. I pledge my
full cooperation with the university authority.
"Join hands with us to ensure that there is peace in the university and
Oyo State in general," he added.
