The battle between Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti State and the Governor Elect Mr. Ayodele Fayose has taken a new dimension as the Transition Committee set up by Ekiti State governor-elect, Mr Ayo Fayose, has written commercial banks in the state, warning them against involvement in illegal financial dealings, with the outgoing administration of Governor Kayode Fayemi.
In a letter dated September 2 and signed by the Chairman, Chief Dipo Anisulowo, which was sent to all branch managers of commercial banks operating in the state, the committee said it had information that the outgoing administration was mopping up N50 million each from the banks, under the guise of taking contributions for Education Trust Fund (ETF) from them.
Anisulowo who criticised the activities of Governor Fayemi, wondered why the administration would carry out such act at the twilight of its tenure.
“Similarly, we have been informed that some banks are being used by the incumbent government to effect payments on phony and nonexistent multi-billion naira contracts/
procurement/services, Ekiti State University (EKSU), Ado-Ekiti, inclusive.
“The purpose and intent of this letter therefore, is to advise your bank and financial institution to decline further cooperation with the administration on these irregular expenditures and on any
other questionable financial transactions, which lack integrity,” he warned.
The committee chairman therefore, enjoined the banks to conduct their business with the outgoing government with sincerity of purpose, respect fo financial laws guiding their operations and in line with the ethics and codes of conduct for banks and financial institutions operating in Nigeria.
In its response to development, the state government decried what it described as “a sinister plan by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to generate public disaffection against the Fayemi administration.”
The state Commissoner for Information and Civic Orientation, Mr Tayo Ekundayo, said PDP should “focus on ways of ensuring a smooth transition in the state and how to record any laudable achievement, during the next administration, instead of its current campaign of calumny against the present government.”
