MONDAY- 4th October, 2021: The National Agency for Foods and Drugs Administration and Control, (NAFDAC) has warmed Nigerians against consumption of foods and poultry products that are frozen and preserved with formalin.

NAFDAC’s press secretary, Dr. Abubakar Jimoh, gave the warning while speaking NAN.

According to him, some bad business people have been preserving food items like chicken, turkey and other poultry products with formalin, a poisonous chemical popularly used to preserve corpses in mortuaries.

Dr. Jimoh warned that Formalin is capable of preserving such products for weeks before they get to consumers.

“NAFDAC is alerting Nigerians about this practice. There are enough poultry products in the country than to resort to frozen chicken smuggled in, in spite of Nigerian government’s ban,’’ he said.

Dr. Abubakar also called the attention of consumers to the economic import of patronizing business people who smuggled poultry products into the country.

The NAFDAC spokesman said if sales of such imported food continues, indigenous poultry farmers and marketers would not grow as desired as money spent on smuggled products would only go to originators of the products.

He added that it would also affect Nigeria’s foreign exchange reserves.
