The Studentate Dominican Province of St Joseph the Worker (Nigeria and Ghana) and Student Christian Movement (SCM) have collaborated to celebrate locally, an annual international agricultural event, Economy of Francesco (EoF), in Ibadan.
The event, established by the Pope (Francis 1), will be domesticated at the Dominican University’s hall and is expected to host more than a thousand participants, especially youths who have made impact or have interest in agriculture.
Economy of Francesco is aimed at borrowing ideas from the experience of veteran farmers, while tapping from the strength of the youth to promote agriculture, economy and, ultimately, sustain life.
Slated by the Pope, to hold globally between 22nd and 24th of September, in Assisi, the main conference, seminars and workshops will hold on the 23rd, which some regions may domesticate based on the peculiarity of their settings, while Pope addresses the global community on the 24th; the first two editions held virtually, 2020 and 2021.
In a chat with CEOAFRICA on Wednesday the September 14th, the Chairman Local Organizing Committee of the epoch-making event, Vincent Obasi, said the event, nicknamed “Agriculture and Justice” and tagged “Make it Local”, aims to bridge the generational gap between the youths and the veterans, with focus on agriculture.
Obasi stated further that the event, which will hold on Friday, September 23, 2022, at Dominican University, Samonda, Ibadan, at exactly 10:00am, will be graced by many dignitaries such as Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who doubles as the Founder Otta Farm, Oyo State Governor, Engr Seyi Makinde, Dr. Patrick Adebola, Executive Director of Cocoa Research Institute, Hon. Adeniyi Adebisi, Oyo State Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Hon. Asiwaju Seun Fakorede, Oyo State Commissioner for Youth and Sport among others.
The Economy of Francesco, as earlier implied, is an international event that was established by Pope Francis in November 2020 and dedicated, in particular, to young people working in the field of economics, those who study economic disciplines, as well as young entrepreneurs, researchers and economists from all over the world.
The idea is to develop a new economics for the 21st century, one that responds to the challenges of our time; Pope, in his inimitable wisdom, turned the task over to young economists around the world, with oldsters serving as advisers and sounding boards.
The young people around the world will be in Assisi between 22nd – 24th September in the city of St Francis for the event; Pope Francis will also be in Assisi on 24th September for the event to meet young economists, entrepreneurs and change-makers from around the world, who have been working for EoF for the last three years.
Over the last few years, the Holy Father has been kept informed about the activities undertaken by the young people and he offered them words of inspiration and encouragement in two video messages to the EoF events held online in 2020 and 2021; confirmation has now been received that a meeting with the Holy Father in person will take place in Assisi.
The young people, who will come from all over the world, have formed a true community that has produced projects, initiatives, study resources and research; their average age is 28; 30% come from the business world, and another 30% from research, while 40% are change-makers (students, social movements, NGO’s).
Funds, in form of grant, have been released to enable participants who would be in attendance but need support to either foot their transport bills or cost of registration; the application for the funds have closed in April.
This event, although being celebrated at the Dominican University, is not being hosted by the school, as the university is part of the participants.
