The Federal Government has introduced an alternative yam farming system, which involves the use of sacks, due to farmer-herder clashes.
All farmers across the country were advised to key into the innovation towards ensuring food security in the Country.
The Minister of Agriculture, Dr Muhammed Abubakar, disclosed this in Ado Ekiti, during the course of a training programme organized for some yam farmers across the 16 local government areas of the State.
Abubakar, who was represented by a senior official in the Ministry, Dr Perpetua Iyere-Usiahon, noted that such innovation is healthy, economical, tested and trusted.
The Minister said using sack bags for the production of yam is one of the strategies towards achieving Sustainable Development Goals.
Abubakar assured farmers across the Country that President Buhari’s administration is committed to food security and will do everything possible to prioritize the needs of farmers.
The Minister therefore charged the beneficiaries to extend the knowledge gained during the training to other farmers in their local governments.
After the training, the farmers were given yam stems to test-run the innovation.
