The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) yesterday warned commercial drivers against the use of local medicine ‘Juju’ while driving. The FRSC Oluyole Unit Commander, Sanya Adeoye while speaking at rally tagged “Beyond the Road” organized for members of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Ibadan,he said as a result of over confidence most of the drivers have local medicine, many lives have been lost.“We are the one always on the road especially when an accident occurs, by the time you get to the scene of the road crashes, you will discover the driver had disappeared,” HE SAID.
The FRSC boss who noted that the rally was aimed at educating the drivers on the risk they take especially when they were not medically fit, said that the corps had decided to invite medical experts from different hospitals; Metro High Clinic, Bodija; Lad Medical Centre, New Garage and Molete Medical Centre to and conduct medical checks on the drivers.
While noting that medical tests like that of eye, blood pressure and hypertensive were important for the drivers, he said “it is not about disease but about age, we need to check our sight considering its importance to driving.
According to him, most of the road crashes were caused due to bad sight of some of the drivers. He also charged the leaders of the NURTW in the state to always ensure that both the drivers and commuters comply with the filling of the manifest sheet which he said would always assist the FRSC in case of accident.
He stressed the importance of the manifest to include compensation by insurance company in case of accident and serve as contact for families of accident victims.
He explained that section 51 sub section 1-5 of the National Road Traffic Regulations, the (NRTR 2004) dwell on passengers manifest while sub section (1) stipulates that “all passengers carrying commercial vehicles shall, before commencing any intercity journey, keep and maintain a passenger manifest indicating the names of its passengers, their address, their point of departure, destination.“Sub-section (4) state that the driver or person taking charge of a passenger commercial vehicle shall when requested by the appropriate authority, present the manifest for examination and if such is not presented to the appropriate authority on demand such person will be charge to court for a period of six month or option of fine of #10,000” he said.
