The Rivers State Chapter of the People’s Democratic Party Presidential Campaign Council (PDP PCC) has cancelled the much anticipated presidential rally slated for Tuesday in the state over the continued feud between the Governor of the State, Nyesom Wike and the party’s presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
It would be recalled that Wike and Atiku have been at loggerheads since the presidential primary of the party where the governor lost the presidential ticket to the former Vice President.
Wike and his allies, the G-5 Governors have, however, distanced themselves from the party campaign, giving Senator Iyioricha Ayu’s resignation as the party’s National Chairman as a condition for them to campaign for Atiku, but the party called their bluff.
Announcing the suspension of the rally on Monday evening, Senator Lee Meaba who spoke on behalf of the PCC in Port Harcourt said the rally would no longer be held in Rivers because of security reasons.
Given the reason for the cancellation, Meaba said Atiku informed the team that he did not want any bloodshed in Rivers, hence the decision to cancel the rally.
He called on President Muhammadu Buhari to act decisively by instructing and making sure the security agencies do their job in an impartial manner that will ensure free and fair elections.
Daily Independent had last week reported that the Chairman of the PDP PCC in Rivers, Dr Abiye Sekibo, was attacked in Port Harcourt and his vehicle was riddled with bullets.
Sekibo had accused policemen attached to the Rivers State Government House of being behind the incident, but Governor Nyesom Wike denied it.
