From Central African Republic, it was gathered that thousands of people have fled to the main airport in Bangui due to series of “harassment” by the ex-rebel fighters in the country, CEOAFRICA.com gathered.

The Seleka fighters, who seized power from the country’s president in March, were trying to disarm residents who lived near the airport.

It was gathered that the peacekeeping troops were now trying to move them from the airport so as to resume normal operations.

This follows recent warning by aid agencies that the fighters had looted the healthcare system of the country and left it in a state of jeopardy.

UN humanitarian chief, Valerie Amos explained that about a third of the country's 4.6 million people need assistance with food, shelter, health care or water.

Also, in her speech, another member of the UN humanitarian agency said those who had fled their homes were now trapped between the peacekeepers and the Seleka fighters. She urged that the Seleka fighters should be removed, or leave those neighbourhoods, so that people can go home.

The airport is one of the few parts of the capital under the control of a regional peacekeeping force.

It would be recalled that Mr. Michael Djotodia, the head of Seleka fighters, was sworn-in as the country’s president and he promised to relinquish power after elections in 2016.
