As the world marked the World Health Day 2024, the President of the Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN), Professor Cyril Odianose Usifoh, has called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to invest more in the healthcare sector.

Usifoh said this in a statement, celebrating the 2024 Health Day where he also noted his commitment in PSN to promote the fight against drugs abuse and encouraging responsible healthcare practices throughout the country.

The president of PSN, who said the betterment of the health sector in the country will reduce the exodus of skilled pharmacists to developed countries, therefore urged both the federal and state governments to reconfigure the health architecture in the country in a bid to keep hold of the manpower the country is losing in droves.

Usifoh also advised the public to take prompt care of their health by seeking professional help from pharmacists rather than resort to self-medication, explaining that self-medication leads to drug misuse and abuse, which can have severe consequences on individuals' health.

Recognizing the common practice of self-medication within the population, Professor Usifoh urged the public to consult a pharmacist, who can provide the appropriate guidance and advice for any health issues.

World Health Day is commemorated every year on April 7, the founding day of the World Health Organisation (WHO), to raise awareness about global health issues and highlight the importance of well-being.

The theme for this year is “My health, my right”.

The theme was chosen to champion the right of everyone, everywhere to have access to quality health services, education, and information, as well as safe drinking water, clean air, good nutrition, quality housing, decent working and environmental conditions, and freedom from discrimination.
