A man, Shuaibu Yushau, who climbed a high broadband mast at Aso Radio in Katampe, Abuja, in an attempt to commit suicide, has been sent to the Social Development Secretariat for mental evaluation.

Yushau, from Borno State, who was taken into custody by the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command on Monday, will undergo a mental assessment to determine his state of mind at the time of the incident.

Eyewitnesses recounted that Yushau scaled the mast, causing widespread panic and alarm among residents and passersby.

The FCT police on getting the report, promptly deployed its operatives to the scene to persuade him to shelve his suicide mission.

Yushau, after hours of negotiation, eventually came down from the mast and was taken into custody by the police.

Meanwhile, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, on Tuesday, said that Yushau will be charged to court for attempted suicide, disturbance of public peace, and incitement if found to be mentally stable after the evaluation.

“The suspect, if found to be mentally stable after the test, will be charged in court for attempted suicide, disturbance of public peace, and incitement contrary to sections 231, 111, and 114 of the Penal Code Act,” she said.

The Commissioner of Police, FCT, CP Benneth C. Igweh, on his part, urged residents to be law-abiding while pushing for their voices to be heard, emphasizing that the police will not be stampeded into allowing the breakdown of law and order.
