The Dominican University, Samonda, Ibadan will hold its combined 3rd and 4th convocation ceremonies on Saturday, December 7, 2024, in which a total of 134 graduates will receive degrees and prizes.
The Vice Chancellor of Dominican University, Professor Jacinta Opara, who disclosed this on Monday while addressing a press conference to herald the ceremonies, announced that of the 134 students, 13 bagged first class; 76 graduated with second class (upper division); 37 bagged second class (lower division) while nine graduated third class.
Professor Opara, who gave a breakdown of the graduates, said: “In the 2022/2023 session, we graduated (60) students: Philosophy (25), Mass Communication (14), Economics (3), Accounting (2) and Computer Science (16). Among these students, four had first class honours; 37 had second class honours (upper division); 15 had second class honours (lower division) and five with third class.”
Opara explained further: “This academic session 2023/2024, we are graduating (74) students: Philosophy (27), Christian Religion Studies (2), Mass Communication (9), Economics (2), Accounting (3), Business Administration (1) Computer Science (8) and HND – BSc. Conversion programmes (22). From this academic session, we have nine students with first class honours; 39 with second class honours (upper division); 22 have second class honours (lower division) and four with third class.”
She said Dominican University was releasing the “134 young people into the world of work with confidence that they will continue to grow and flourish, making a lasting impact on our community and the world.”
The Vice-Chancellor said the institution was giving young people an all-round education, saying “educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all. At Dominican University, education is about the whole person; mind, body, and spirit. We provide an environment where students grow academically, socially, emotionally, and morally. We prepare them not only to succeed in their careers but also to lead fulfilling lives that make a difference in the world.”
Among other events, she disclosed that the university’s convocation lecture entitled: “The Future Starts Today” will be delivered by the Executive Director of Oxygen Orbis Hotel & Resorts, Ibadan, Dr Paul Ilona, a scientist, entrepreneur, and advocate in the fields of science, technology, and societal development.
Opara also announced that during the ceremonies, the university will host Mr. John Alamu, experienced statistician and Group Managing Director, CapitalSage Holdings as a distinguished special guest of honour along with the varsity’s Chancellor, Very Rev. Fr. Modestus Ngwu, OP, saying “their presence underscores our university’s commitment to fostering excellence and leadership in our graduates.”
She added that there would be presentation of honourary degrees to deserving individuals while there would also be prizes and awards for the graduating students who have distinguished themselves in character and learning.
