Justice Peter Lifu of the Federal High Court in Abuja has issued a conclusive order restraining the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) from going ahead with its 2025 National Convention slated for Ibadan, Oyo State.

The convention, scheduled for November 15 and 16, is intended to elect the PDP’s national officers.

In delivering judgement on a suit instituted by former Jigawa State Governor, Sule Lamido, Justice Lifu stopped the PDP from holding the convention until it adheres to its Constitution and Convention Guidelines.

He directed that the convention remain suspended until Sule Lamido is permitted to obtain a nomination form for the position of National Chairman.

The judge also barred the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from overseeing, observing, or supporting the convention unless the former governor is allowed to take part.

Justice Lifu ruled that the PDP is firmly bound to follow its internal rules and procedures by ensuring that qualified members are granted the chance to pursue their ambitions.

He further stated that it was improper for the PDP to deprive Lamido of the opportunity to buy the nomination form for the office of National Chairman.

Lamido, in an ex-parte motion filed by his lawyer Jeph Njikonye, on October 31, had prayed the court to grant the interim order pending the hearing of the motion on notice.

He argued that if PDP was not restrained, the party would violate its constitution and deny him the opportunity to contest for national chairman.

On October 31, Justice Lifu declined to grant the motion but ordered PDP and INEC to show cause why Lamido’s reliefs should not be granted, giving them 72 hours to respond. The matter was adjourned to 6 November.
