The Nigerian Cancer Society (NCS) has lodged formal petitions with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Department of State Services (DSS), and the Nigeria Police Force, calling for a full investigation into allegations of false cancer claims made by social media influencer Blessing Okoro.
In a statement signed by the Society’s National Director of Publicity, Hon. Bashir Mohammed Ranccasu, the NCS said the petition followed growing public concern over allegations that the influencer falsely claimed to be suffering from stage four cancer and solicited donations from Nigerians for treatment.
The Society stated that the move was necessary to uphold accountability, transparency, and integrity within cancer advocacy and patient support systems in the country.
It recalled that it had earlier condemned the alleged conduct, describing it as unethical and detrimental to efforts aimed at supporting genuine cancer patients in Nigeria.
According to the NCS, the seriousness of the allegations, as well as their potential to erode public trust in charitable health-related fundraising, necessitated escalation to relevant security agencies for thorough investigation in the public interest.
The Society further emphasized that cancer remains a life-threatening disease that requires honesty, compassion, and responsible engagement, warning that any form of exploitation undermines the credibility of genuine patients and could discourage public support for those in need.
The allegations emerged after the influencer reportedly claimed on social media a few weeks ago that she had been diagnosed with stage four cancer in Enugu and required financial assistance for treatment. Following her appeal, she reportedly received over ₦12 million in donations from members of the public.
However, recent developments allege that the claim was false, with reports indicating that the original owner of the medical document presented has come forward, alleging that the document was altered to support the influencer’s claim.
