The Lagos State Government has announced a partial traffic diversion along the Kara Bridge section of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway as rehabilitation works on the bridge’s expansion joint commence on Tuesday, July 28, 2026.

In a statement issued by the Lagos State Ministry of Transportation, the government disclosed that the Federal Ministry of Works will undertake the repair project, which is expected to last for two weeks.

As part of the rehabilitation, the existing four-lane carriageway will be temporarily reduced to two lanes over a 1.5-kilometre stretch to create a safe work zone for engineers carrying out the repairs.

The ministry noted that the lane reduction could lead to moderate traffic congestion, particularly around the Fatgbems Turn, as some motorists may make U-turns or seek alternative routes to avoid delays.

"To facilitate the repair works, the existing four-lane carriageway will be temporarily reduced to two lanes over a 1.5-kilometre stretch to provide a safe work zone," the statement read.

Despite the temporary disruption, the ministry assured motorists travelling towards Ibadan beyond the Fatgbems Turn that traffic is expected to remain largely unaffected throughout the repair period.

Road users were urged to plan their journeys in advance, explore alternative routes where feasible, comply with traffic regulations, and cooperate with traffic management personnel deployed along the corridor to ensure smooth traffic movement.

The government appealed for public understanding and patience, emphasizing that the rehabilitation project is designed to enhance the structural integrity, safety, and longevity of the Kara Bridge for the benefit of all road users.
