The Benue State Internal Revenue Service (BIRS) has decreased the tariffs on produce and forestry items by more than 50% in conformity with legal provisions.
The Chairman, Mr. Terzungwe Atser, who spoke at a meeting with lead revenue consultants, in his office, said it was unlawful that tax payers are charged ridiculous levies.
According to him, the board frowns at reasons given by tax payers, ranging from high and multiple taxes, for closing.
He said: “It is regrettable that firms like Olam Farms, Benue Breweries Limited, Ostrich Bakeries, among others, are complaining of multiple taxes.
“Indeed, some items were not taxable and those taxable ones were over taxed.”
Atse,r urged contractors and tax collectors to ensure compliance with the adjusted tariffs.
He promised that the board, under his leadership, will not subject tax payers to unnecessary levies which in most cases do not get to the government’s purse.
“I will ensure that only legitimate levies and taxes are charged and collected. From now onwards, the new tariffs would start and the old one suspended,” he added.
