The African Union has lamented the death of Idriss Deby, President of the Republic of Chad, and expressed its solidarity with the Government and people of the country, Chad.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the AU disclosed that the late President Deby, during his existence, played vital role in promoting the Union’s Agenda of ensuring peace and security in the Sahel region.
The statement read: “The African Union expresses its deepest condolences to the family and the people of The Republic of Chad following the untimely passing of H.E. President Idriss Déby.
“The late President Déby played a key role in promoting the African Union’s Agenda to promote peace and security and was an ardent supporter of the Union’s efforts to create an environment of security and stability, especially within the Sahel region.
“The African Union stands in solidarity with the Government and People of the Republic of Chad during this difficult time and joins them in mourning the loss of a champion of Africa’s endeavours to provide a peaceful, secure and stable continent.
“May his soul rest in peace.”
Recall that CEOAFRICA reported that the Chad President Idriss Deby passed away on Tuesday, 20 April, 2020 while leading his country’s army against rebels.
The 68-year-old died a day he was declared the winner of a presidential election that had given him a sixth term in office.
Deby was said to have ruled his country for three years.
