The House of Representatives will Wednesday begin a speedy consideration of the 2015 appropriation bill as it commences debate on the general principles of the proposed budget.

The Speaker of the House of Representative, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal urged members at the resumption of plenary of the House on Tuesday to study the budget details in advance.

House leader, Hon. Mulikat Akande-Adeola moved a motion calling for the postponement of commencement of debate on the budget, she told journalists that “in view of the fact that we are barely 40 days to the general elections, it is
incumbent on us to pass the budget quickly to allow time for the lawmakers to prepare for elections.

“Again, we are not unaware of the fact that INEC and other agencies of government need funds to be able to function effectively. Although, the
budget was presented late, we have resolved that the budget be passed in a record time. So, we will speedily work on the MTEF.“

She explained that the lower chamber is likely to reduce the oil benchmark from $65 to $40 per barrel as a result of the fall of oil price globally.
